A rip-roaring success...

Just when I thought it was no longer possible for my children to shock me, they went and did it again. Soccer this evening was a rip-roaring success. Sophie was initially hesitant when she saw the crowd of kids and parents gathered on the field. It was more than a little choatic, so I understood her hesitance. However, after a few minutes of needing me right beside her holding her hand, she took off and never looked back. She ran, she dribbled the ball, she played catch-the-coach, she kicked the ball into the net. She took a knee when the coach was talking. She was a hard-core serious soccer player. A sight to behold! And Nicholas...my little Nick-Nick did amazingly well. Despite telling me the minute I walked in the door from work this afternoon (and three more times before soccer practice began) that he didn't want to play soccer, but only wanted to watch...he grabbed a ball immediately and began kicking it around when we arrived at the park. We were a few minutes late for practice because Nicholas informed me about two miles from the practice field (coming home from my mom's house) that he had pooped in his pants. Seriously?! He had been doing so well the last few days. Luckily, the park was only two blocks from our house and we could stop home, grab a pull-up, and do a quick-change in the minivan. Not once did Nicholas cry. Not once did he plop down on the ground refusing to play. Not once did he curl up into a fetal position on the field. There were no histrionics. No melodrama. He amazed me to no end. He even showed a tiny miniscule hint of...gasp...athleticism. I am dumbfounded right now. I feel as though I somehow averted a disaster...as though fate made a tragic misstep and forgot about me this evening . Perhaps the gods of misbehavior, who usually stand at the ready to rain turmoil and pandemonium upon me, miraculously went on a smoke break? Whatever the cause...whatever the reason, I will happily take it. Next Tuesday may be a different story altogether.
